Level Objectives
Appropriate safe entry
- Students will enter the pool safely and know when it is safe to enter the water.
Flutter kick 12.5 yards assisted w/ face submerged
- Students can use a kick board or noodle. Must also have mouth, nose and face submerged to blow bubbles.
Flutter kick 12.5 yards assisted on back
- Students can use a kick board or noodle. Students learn how to kick on their backs as the next building block for backstroke.
Breaststroke kick 5 yards assisted
- Students can use a kick board or noodle to perform breaststroke kick for 5 yards
Rollovers unassisted
- Students start in a front float and rotate to a back float independently
Front glide 3 yards unassisted in streamline
- Students extend their arms in front of them with one hand on top of the other, arms squeezing their ears, and push off the wall in a horizontal position with face submerged blowing bubbles. No kicks.
Free style 5 yards unassisted
- Students combine flutter kicks and freestyle arms to swim 5 yards independently
Side kick 3 yards assisted
- Students can use a kick board or noodle. Students are positioned on their side horizontally with one arm extended “glued” to their ear and other arm “glued” to their side. Small, fast flutter kicks. Introduction to how to position the body to side breath.
Backstroke 5 yards unassisted
- Students learn appropriate arm position for backstroke. Combine with flutter kicks.
Treading (15 seconds)
- Keeping fingers together students move arms back and forth at the surface of the water and bicycle kick in a vertical position. Chin, mouth, and nose should remain above the water.

- Students will safely exit the pool.
